Today is the day. John comes home. π π π
If all goes well, we should be home by around noon, and I'll share some pictures once we're settled.
So many people have asked how they can help. The truth is, I don't know yet.
Today I'll be learning his medications, his diet, his follow-up appointments, and all of the things that come with bringing him home. But the biggest thing I'll be learning is what our new normal feels like.
When I say John can't talk, it means so much more than not being able to speak. Imagine living with your best friend, knowing he has thoughts, feelings, jokes, and questions, but he can't always express them. His brain is still healing. Sometimes he'll accidentally use a fork to try to write instead of a pen, and then we both laugh. He writes a few disjointed things at a time, like dogs, nap, pool. On my birthday card, he wrote my full name, Wendy Fullam. He hasnt written a sentence, like "I love you". He has a long road ahead.
Many people have asked about visiting. For now, we're asking for a little time. This week needs to be about the two of us figuring things out. I don't know how he'll do with the dogs jumping up, the repeated stairs, naps, or the rhythm of being home. His legs get tired and sore. Tomorrow we'll learn more about his outpatient therapy schedule, and until then, we're simply taking it one step at a time.
If you'd like to help, the greatest gift you can give us right now is patience. Give John time to heal. Give us time to find our footing.
I'm scared. I'm nervous. And I'm trying very hard not to cry every time someone asks what they can do. Your love means more than you know. Right now, the best way to show it is to simply give us a little space while we learn this new chapter together.
Thank you for understanding. Stay tuned for pictures and updates! β€οΈβ€οΈβ€οΈ
